Harlequins Trophy visits EBC19 Jul 2012 - 12:17pm
The Aviva Premiership trophy won by Harlequins FC this year made a special stop at Ernest Bevin College to give the school's rising young rugby stars a chance to see for themselves the top prize. The college benefits from a link with the rugby club which provides a full time rugby coach to enable all boys to play rugby and has produced talented and increasingly successful rugby squads.
The rugby team captains Left to Rigth Kwesi (Year 9), Benjy (kneeling from Year 7) and Hamza (Year 8) with the Aviva Premiership trophy won by Harlequins this season.
This has been a very succesful season for the Ernest Bevin College rugby squads. The Years 7 & 8 teams both won their pools in the Surrey league and the Year 8 team finished as runners up. The Year 9 team was defeated only twice: once in a tight match 24-26 against Tiffins before Christmas and in the Surrey Cup Quarter finals against Salesians Weybridge.
At the end of Febraury we hosted the EBC Rugby 7s tournament and won the Year 7 & 9 tournaments and were runners up in the Year 8 competition. We also fielded an under-17 side for the first time. The teams also played in the Surrey Schools 7s tournament which is one of the toughest tournaments of its kind. All the teams did remarkably well against sides from long established rugby playing schools.
Another highlight of the season came when the Year 8 team won the City of London Freemans U13 Sevens Festival and made it through to the last 16 in the National Schools 7s tournament.
We also have a number of individuals playing rugby outside of school: three green ties and four purple ties play at Rosslyn Park Rugby Club and a number are also playing at Battersea Ironsides. Boys also continue to be selected for the Harlequins Satellite School of Rugby. Two boys (Leonard and Denzel) have played for the Surrey U14 development squand and Azam has maintained his spot in the Surrey and Harlequins School of Rugby.
Well done to Harlequins and to all EBC's rugby players for a highly succesful season. Roll on next season!
