2012 Olympic Training Venue

LORD COE VISITS BEVIN

On Monday 3rd March, the college received a surprise visit from Lord Sebastian Coe, Chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games; Tessa Jowell MP, Olympic Minister and John Brewer, Chair of the London Sport Board.

The purpose of the visit was to hold a press briefing to announce the list of sporting facilities throughout the UK that will appear in the Pre-Games Training Camp Guide.  This guide, which will be published in Beijing, lists high quality sports facilities which are of the standard capable of hosting visiting Olympic teams wishing to prepare to take part in the London Olympic Games in 2012.

The college was proud to be congratulated by Lord Coe following our inclusion in the 2012 pre-training camp guide.  He felt a facility like ours would attract a wide selection of teams - particularly in volleyball, table tennis, basketball, judo and wrestling.  He wished us well in securing a visiting Olympic team and presented the college with a certificate of verification to show that we are in the official London 2012 Training Camp Guide.

Many members of press and media were present for this announcement and an item was included on the BBC London News on Monday.

It was a great honour to have Lord Coe at Bevin.  He was a former world class athlete and probably the greatest British middle distance runner.

Sebastian Coe won 1500 m gold medals at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984.  He also set eight outdoor and three indoor world records.  After his athletic career he became a Conservative Party politician and was head of the London Bid to host the 2012 summer Olympics.
