Sport - Physiology Workshop 2012
-
EBC sports students take part in a special STEM activity to measure physiology and see how it affects sporting performance
-
After assessing overall fitness using the bleep test, students had to measure their lung capacity
-
Mr Lane explains how to blow into a special bag to measure the volume of air in the lungs
-
This gives a measurement of lung capacity or the volume of air that can be held inside the lungs
-
In many sports an increased lung capacity can give an advantage over competitors
-
Another test was to measure each individual's flexiblity
-
The students had to measure how far they could reach from a sitting position
-
Flexibility is more important in some sports than others, so the students found their results varied in this test.
-
Up in the gym, another group of students made mesaurements on muscle size before and after exercise
-
Students timed each other in activities including step ups...
-
...the dreaded push ups
-
and bench jumps
-
Mr Newman helps with the weight lifting exercise
-
Students found that their muscle size increased after taking part in the exercises and compared results with each other
-
Overall it was a good opportunity for some of the college's top sportsmen to work together across the different disciplines
-
And look at some of the science behind sporting performance.
